Martial Arts Talk
By Jung Shee Lacy

Greetings Action readers and 'Happy Fall.' It is finally cooling down here in the high desert of San Diego County.

Many may recall articles in the past where I covered the origins of Chinese music I mentioned that coconut shells were used. Certain tones open certain charkas. Sound rides light. Light is substance. Because of its unstable nature it is hard to weigh with modern instruments. Studies at John Hopkins using water scales have indicated that about 2 grams leave the body at the moment of death. Many of my Buddhist Shil lum Five Elder meditations utilize the "OM" to open up the charkas.

In Kung Fu we refer to music as the universal language of humans and angels or "Music - the magnet of fellowship." Emperor Huang-ti (circa 2697 B.C. sent his minister, Ling-lun, to the Kuenlun Mountains in northwest China to cut a pitch-pipe from a species of bamboo which gave the normal pitch tone. There are 130 or more instruments in China. Traditionally there were 72 that were divided into eight categories; stone, metal, stringed, bamboo, wood, skin, gourd and clay. In China during 1999 flutes were found from the wing bones of red-crowned heron that are still playable.

In kung fu, the scholar was not considered appropriate to carry weapons, thus the flute took form as a 'hidden weapon.' Some of our popular and effective fighting weapon forms are the solo flute, double flute and double flute vs. saber and staff.

If we go back further in history, sometime between 43,000 and 82,000 years ago, a Neanderthal living in a cave in what is now Slovenia, fashioned a flute from the femur of a bear. Darwin in his 1871 book "The Descent of Man," suggested that early men and women "endeavored to charm each other with musical notes and rhythm," as birds do. I highly recommend learning the classical Chinese flute. Not only will it help meditation, but it can be carried on planes!

In closing, I just finished my sixth "Mew Hing 18 Daoist Palms Sacred Chi Building Formulas Booklet." I re-write, breakdown and fill these myself along with my herbalist of 18 years. I learn a lot from the process. Formula #5 in booklet #6 is an external jow. One of my hobbies is the metaphysical properties of stones/minerals. I came across Gypsum Fibrosum. Gypsum in the fibrous form is really gypsum. When you meditate with this mineral you can mold your character toward growth and improvement. Stagnation is eliminated and progression is strengthened. It also sustains calm when things are moving too quickly. It is associated with the sign Aries. It has been called the "lucky stone," and aboriginal tribes use it in ceremonies of rainmaking. An elixir applied to the skin can produce strong bones and renew elasticity of skin and tissues. It vibrates to the number 2. Kwai Chang Cane in the kung fu series would have related to all this!

God Bless. Be patriotic and go make some money. As my former teacher Wai would say…"to make money with kung fu you must not only know the art, but be an actor and salesman as well."
