Happy Millennium Karate Voice Readers!

Hello loyal readers. I hope each and every one of you finds a way to make happiness your duty and not your destiny. Have you been following what has been going on in Greece? I don’t know about you, but what we westerners call Greek Mythology is to the hard core Greeks, a religion unto itself. As an underdog supporter of separation of Church and State, I hope the Orthodox Christian majority will respect the religion that developed from Greek Mythology. To me, freedom is more important than truth, or in other words it springboards off knowledge, wisdom and truth in sequential order. The Asian respect for western culture during the Ching and even now, stemmed from basically the language of science, math. We all know we owe Greek culture when it comes to foundations of math.

So; awhile back the magazine powers that be could not get enough of this UFC. What happened opened our eyes 360 degrees back to Greek Pankration. Nobody but heavyweight boxing champions of the world are paid the most for the least work. The transition of Gumby moves from little payday UFC to WCW and WWF, ala the ‘luchadore – cruiserweights’ merely created a ‘reality’ contrast. For example, boxing has evolved over the years to about 17 weight divisions. No one remembers anyone except the heavyweight champion, albeit, there are a few organizations claiming they have the ‘true’ champ, thus the belt unification trend now being set by England’s champ who unified the major belts from his title fight with Holyfield.

Shamrock was the first to break into the bigger money. Short lived, I don’t see him anymore. Dan Severn followed. He looked well for awhile, and then disappeared, supposedly after suffering a neck injury at the hands of Owen Hart while in a match. So much for the fake eccentrics…this is physically demanding! Then there is the ‘lethal weapon,’ who seems to win some and lose some, but nevertheless has figured out how to have fun and ‘endure’ longevity in the higher paying bracket than UFC type organizations. ‘Tank’ Abbott has leaped to the bigger bucks by joining up with WCW. I like his Pankration method of merely closing the gap and throwing a ‘real’ very hard knockout punch. We’ll see if this one dimensional but traditionally manly approach can knock out the likes of well-balanced martial artist Jerry Flynn. I think the trend is going for knockout fist power, but we shall see. Indisputable is the ‘fact’ that the heavyweight boxing champion of the world gets paid the most of any professional athlete and does not have to fight but four or five times a year to accomplish that. What could be more like Greek Pankration than the evolution of the highest paid fighting sport? Have we come full circle. Tank Abbott is supposed to be able to bench press between 500 and 600 pounds. Is this the Greek ideal? Almost! The flat bench is the epitome of strength. Ideally (a term the Greeks loved,) a person should be able to bench press two and a half times their body weight. That means a 250-pound man is not really ideal at chest power until they can perfectly bench 625. Furthermore unless one is doing that 625 without a spotter and no warm-up, to the tune of three sets of six with about a minute rest between sets…again, the word "ideal."

We have never seen a kung fu master from China meet heavyweight requirements, fight by boxing rules and win the heavyweight championship just to prove kung fu could adjust to the western manly concept of in your face and toe to toe, without low blows or what western boxing fans of the early century would call ‘sissy’ moves. Time will tell.

Finally, what about this hoopla about Falung Gong? First it was the renegade monk escaping the Shaolin Temple and going to the East Coast. Then it was the Wen Ho Lee incident followed by a crackdown on qigong. I often wonder if the falung gong is not a publicity stunt to sell us westerners more qigong. I thought it was clever how they gave a western magazine their take on white eyebrow, saying his real name was Fung Do Duk. What else would you expect? China does not want to admit that the five elders helped create the koumingtang and after the war went to Taiwan, not just Hong Kong and Macau.

Back to Basics

As I like to share something of substance in each article, I hope it is a reward for listening to my rambling. This is an authentic Five Elder Monk Mew Hing 18 Daoist Palms Buddhist/Shaolin Seated Meditation. It is for chi cultivation, mental clarity, chi projection in the hands and for health and/or self-defense.

Instructions:

Assume the seated cross leg posture. Sit against a wall or use a meditation bench or pillow. Most importantly, be comfortable. In dire conditions, if you cannot sit like this, then use a chair. Your hands are positioned as if they are holding a ball, (face high.) Your eyes should be closed and tongue on the roof of the mouth. Take two very deep-relaxed breaths to start. Breath in and out through the nose with the mouth closed. After these two initial breaths, take a breath and let 50% out. Take a full breath from that point and let it all out. Take a breath and let 40% out. Take a full breath from that point and let it all out. Take a breath and let 30% out. Take a full breath from that point and let it all out. Breathe normally in this posture for three minutes. After awhile work up to five minutes. At advanced practice you may go longer. A few drops of "jow liniment" rubbed into the hands before the meditation will raise the chi level of sensitivity by about 50%. Enjoy!
