Martial Arts Talk

by Jung Shee Lacy

Hello Karate Voice fans! Count me as way up there (fan wise,) for this great publication. In my opinion, aside from the monopolies, Karate Voice and one other magazine, Action out of Brooklyn are far and away the new "Linux" kids on the block.

Sometimes it takes me to other dimensions in my meditations when I ponder how I even got this far in the arts. I mean, I still get a rush when I realize that Vasillios, Gina and Carmen have actually given me a column with the likes of Peter Urban. Then there is Dr. Andrew S. Linick. All our writers and the people we cover constantly inspire me, but those two gentlemen are big enough name power to be columnists in every issue of any magazine on earth.

I will be honest; I read martial magazines mostly through the late 70's and all through the 80's like a fanatic. We are taking seven magazines a month, page to finish like a complete nerd. I have about 2000 back issues in the shed for the museum someday. During most of the 90's I merely bought the issues I was in. My new collections are my Karate Voice and Action back issues. These will be collector items like none other because they represent grass roots martial arts. The families that come from all backgrounds pump me up, as they are the ones filling hundreds of tournaments weekend after weekend all over the globe. These are the backbone workers that actually compete in forms, self-defense, weapons and sparring. They help judge and run the ticket booths and concessions. This is what I mean by grass roots. Nevertheless, we have been flexible as a group brought together by the vision of the Katsaitis family. Indeed we are now one powerful family.

I have learned a lot from Peter Urban through his writing style. He is like the Alan Watts of all this. Then there is the keeping it real columns of Cattlett, Jerry Denson and Carlos. I just want to thank all of you for being 'you.'

It is great to see actors like Joe Piscapo and great crossover stars like Dan Severn still in the trenches of humanitarianism.

I guess you all heard the news about Century buying out Panther Productions. I say it is time we supporters of The Karate Voice help the magazine we love and support, by encouraging the staff to run its own line of instructionals. Why not? Books as well! I am telling you that we have the talented icons right here with us and they have the goods that are not being covered by the monopolies. This is certainly something to think about seriously. I will offer ten titles right now if anyone will match me and if the terms can be 50/50 after expenses. How about it guys and gals?

So, what have I done lately? I learned to digitize and edit through the computer in 30 days! I am using my chi to stay in shape, pay bills, write books and articles, edit and make videos, archive and scan negatives and slides from the last few decades and teach myself HTML 4 and Front Page. I stay available by phone and e-mail to help students worldwide with questions and comments throughout their training. I train in iron palm daily.

In closing, I am proud of each and every one of you and honored to be a part of such a "true" cosmopolitan martial family. I want to use space in future columns to get enough photos to fit a complete meditation. I will also strive to bring you the latest jow formulas broken down from Mew Hing's Sacred Chi Building Herbal Lists passed down to me. I write one herb book per month (five formulas per book.) I also do a video on each book. As a multi-tasking side project, I am making a 430-ingredient color photo database of Chinese herb photos.

Until next time…be good!
