MARTIAL ARTS TALK By: Jung Shee James Patrick Lacy
Greetings everyone!
I am so thrilled with Windows Movie Maker. It comes as an accessory with Windows ME and XP. Windows 2000 may also have it. I was able to get Logitech Movie e-mail type quality and compression. I spent 8 hours trying by trial and error to figure out how to get the digitized endorsement from Parker Linekin to be about 500 KB, so as not to be all so large a download for folks.
This small trailer leaves me with but a six foot circle to do most any form. Fortunately I demonstrated my skill at this with the Seven Star Continuous Fist Form on the Panther series. It was the long one that normally would take a lot of space. For filming tapes to sell in the duplication center, that backdrop is what I can use in any weather. Daylight produces the best indoor footage though.
The beauty of the cyber cam is that one can do real time uploads to their site or pre-record, or best yet, teach and give feedback on small sections of a form at a time. In other words, one could set up a computer in the room designed to teach. The Logitech cord is very long and only needs a USB connection! This means the teacher could sell classes on-line with out buying a digital camcorder.
I was a judge at Ed Parker's Internationals in Long Beach CA back in the early 80's, with Grandmaster Parker Linekin of the Doo's family White Tiger Tai Chi Chuan. At a tournament, three minutes is considered proper time to do a form...five minutes at the most. So, not only could the goal be to do any form in that time frame, but rather lessons as well. A few moves that can fit in a two minute download are the limitation to easily work with.
Now, let's say the student on the other end does not have the technology. Answer: So what? It does not hinder them from learning from the teacher one on one, as private and personal as possible using technology that makes it possible for any student anywhere to get as private a lesson as technology will allow at a cheap price. The student and teacher can keep copies of the video e-mail lessons on CD's or DVD's. These e-mails are mini movies...mini instructionals. Who else is doing this? No one! Is there any cheaper way...No! Does it beat phone calls, the price of travel, or private lessons? You bet. Perhaps best of all is that the software that comes with the Logitech Quick-Cam Pro 3000 does animations and much more.
It boils down to math. If I am on-line sending a Meg file to a 56 k modem, I miss out on getting a call without a second line. What is my image worth, the teacher must ask. Also how many 2 minute lessons can they buy for $60. I figure about 10. The reason being that it takes you two minutes to create and two minutes to send. Each clip is then a total of 4 minutes of your time. Multiply by 10 and the person is getting a cyber private lesson of 40 minutes for $60. Not bad at all. They have to agree that as you create these lessons they will be used in other projects as well. Therefore you merely use their first name. They have to agree that though they can keep the downloaded lesson, you own the copyright from your end. Get it? These lessons could be purchased on Pay Pal. The lessons to learn a form should be the first half and finish moves or whole meditation for between $60 and two blocks of ten e-mails...or $120.
I hope this excites you to the possibilities. As long as the computer by where you teach is set up to go on-line, you are pioneering the new way of teaching. No Mall, no school, no one coming over...etcetera. Best of all, you have the choice then to travel as you please or teach outside the house or in the house as you please. The main thing with this method is you are never as restricted by weather and you are completing your goal of filming the moves as you get paid. One lesson a day over 10 days gives you time to learn that day's moves.
