Martial Arts Talkby Grandmaster LacyIn this column I would like to share some tidbits of information I cut out of morning newspapers while I down my java in the sun-porch which faces the backyard on our 2.57 acres in San Diego County's unincorporated high desert back country. I won't be redundant about the history of Five Elder leader Fung Doe Duk's travels to the Northwest outskirts of China during his escape incognito to shed his Buddhist roots and adapt Taoism to fool Ching authorities. Nevertheless, the Taklemakan Desert where he learned the coconut break was the starting point for my interest in this part of the world. Endeavor flight space image readings of that area proved the existence of the ancient Niya River, which would have easily created a hidden oasis. To visit this image of the Silk Road, go to http://www2.jpl.nasa.gov/files/images/hi-res/p44535.jpg. The known seismic activity in that area could have easily created a vacuum of caves with abundant underground water. Back in 1990 on May 11th The San Diego Union Tribune reported in their NEWS Section A-36 a headline that stated, "Tribe in China isolated for 350 years discovered." The discovery was in the depths of Xinjiang's Taklemakan Desert in northwest China. "The ancestors of these dwellers settled in the place about 350 years ago," said the Beijing-owned news agency, monitored in Hong Kong. "As a result, the descendents of today know nothing about such things as the historical fact of the Qing Dynasty (China's last dynasty) or about anything else up to the present time," the report said. A Chinese oil-exploratory team discovered a small oasis and the ethnic Uygur inhabitants recently, CNS said, but gave no exact time of the discovery. The Uygurs are one of China's ethnic minorities and live mainly in Xinjiang, which borders the Middle Asia part of Russia. I know in the oral tradition passed down by my former teacher that they had cavernous lakes with fish. While we know that Palm trees are the first to appear near an oasis, having them be coconut trees lends credence to this hidden tribe's reverence for the coconut, thus the insistence on breaking it with the palm instead of a rock out of respect. Because of the September 11th events, I have learned much more about this area. Officially it was Urgur inhabitants that showed Fung Doe Duk the coconut break after finding him sick in the desert and taking him to their hidden oasis inside a volcanic cave to heal him. The area is also significant because the Nomad tribes that defeated Fung Doe Duk but kept him as a fighter for them for two years were these ethnic Chinese, Mongul, Russian and Afghanistan area Muslims. This area is now a trouble spot of anarchists for the Chinese government. The area has been chosen by the Chinese government to dig for water, oil and minerals. It is also a military operation test area for the Chinese. Recently discovered fish in a water pit near the #4 Tazhong Oil Field located in remote Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region has Chinese scientists baffled. Workers had carved out the pit with bulldozers during a highway construction project and ground water eventually filled the hole. The black fresh water fish has adapted to the slightly saline water in the pit. The Vice President of the Chinese Academy of Scientists has ruled out the possibility that the fish was brought to the desert by people working there. It was taken to Beijing for further examination. In closing, I also find it interesting that the coconut is still a staple unparallel in third world countries. Every part of the coconut is used and shipped worldwide. Scientists discovered that coconuts can incubate a scientific concoction (based on the germ itself,) that when released on a pond of mosquito larvae, kills the larvae. Adults eat the material that spreads out and floats on the surface only to become sterile. This adds ambiance to each break I do. It is being studied as one of the cheapest organic cures for controlling malaria and other type mosquito maladies. One coconut can treat the average pond. Is it any wonder that a smart man like Bill Gates spends his big bucks on priority spending for inoculations for children, mostly in Africa? To put things in perspective, we just lost over 3000 at the Twin Towers. In comparison, the 1994 genocide in Rwanda claimed an estimated 800,000 lives, but the World Health Organization estimates that a deadly mosquito variety causes a million deaths a year, 90% in Africa.
