Springy Palm Level 2 Seated Meditation From 18 Daoist Palms

For those of you paying attention in the news, it seems as though society has "credentialed," or acknowledged 20 or so, so-called, alternative methods of healing. A side note here; one of my daily rituals is morning coffee and the local newspaper page to finish. I come across these "gems" of data that I handily cut out and box, to use for articles. Anyhow, getting back to this article listing the mainstream accepted alternative-healing methods, conspicuously missing was qigong! TM was there, along with acupuncture, chiropractors and yes, even crystal healing. I will not elaborate on this or judge one way or the other. I merely suggest that you view this in the context of the fa lung gong crackdown in China today. Would this happen if it was accepted in the USA as an accredited mainstream modality of alternative healing? Perhaps a moot point for those of us already reaping the health and martial benefits and the great marketing position of being on the "cutting edge" of something really simple yet really profound.

It is my suggestion that one scenario will have the "other" modalities coming to us for the best qigong to not only keep their own chi strong and abundant, but as well, they will understand how obviously martial iron palm qigong will offer profound "results" for healers who use their hands as the qigong is specifically focused for the hands. We have other types of more purely focused overall health qigong. It is all in your approach to how you want to use this springy palm. For me it created fantastic quick reactions. This manifested in everyday life simple things, like catching something thrown to me in surprise.

Springy palm level #1 I covered in an instructional series. This is the never before let out seated level #2 meditation. This article will give you the legendary hand conditioning procedure for the level 2 springy palm and photos for the seated meditations along with breath control. I will also include a traditional formula used for "quick reactions." Although the scope of this article will not allow for the showing of the standing moving meditation that goes with level 2, nor the photos for the 19 ingredient external liniment hand jow that will work for this training, nevertheless I will include the 19 ingredient formula names and weights to make a gallon. I will save the 'photo space' to share what the ingredients for our "quick reactions" formula photos look like. I will at least give you you names we first came up with in my research from the original Chinese. This research was done in my first herb book in the Library of Congress entitled Authentic Five Elder Martial Art Formulas. Zev Rosenberg of San Diego's Pacific College of Oriental Medicine helped co-author the book. As the head of the Chinese herbology department, his assistance was valuable. My Chinese herbalist that I regularly go to has been helping me break the original herbal lists in Chinese down, slowly but surely over the last 20 years.

Once again, let me remind you of what Bruce Lee said "take what is useful and disregard the rest." To that I only add…only if you wish! If you can only practice this seated meditation five minutes a day at no specific time, or even every so often, believe me, you will get results. Not the legendary "strike" results purported necessarily, but a nice healing meditation that at the same time develops chi in the hands. Hands are the main tools for fighting and healing. On the other hand if you find you want to go traditional, get hold of me for the standing meditation or wait for it to appear perhaps in a future issue of Kung Fu/Qigong. My former teacher taught me 7 levels. He gave me the following history, which I will now share.

Legendary Oral Traditional "Effect"

I was told that proper execution of the "springy palm" would be revealed to me in time. I waited many years to be privy to this very high-level rare iron palm type. The effects I was told were that legend had it that when stuck with the springy palm, one would develop cancer. Hey, don't kill the messenger . Another word my former teacher used to describe the springy palms' ultimate development was "Startling Force."

Let's take a quick break here to read what an old '94 Merriam-Webster Dictionary says concerning these words springy and startling. 1. Springy: without going into detail, the key words I focused on were resilient (having or showing a lively and energetic movement.) 2. Resilient: recoil, leap, capable of withstanding shock without permanent deformation or rupture. The tending to recover from or adjust to misfortune or change. Before going to the word my former teacher referred to as startling, let me just share one more word that comes to mind with springy. That is the word sally. Sally means to rush forward or leap out burstfully and suddenly.

Startling means to cause momentary fright, surprise or astonishment. I have seen my cat use it to leap 3 feet in mid air from a nap to catch a fly perfectly between his paws without killing it. I have done these meditations and built up tremendous explosive energy. I have experimented with the speed using a backfist in the middle of the meditation to "test" the speed…it works so don't try it, it disrupts the chi.

Legendary Procedure

Sit on the couch or chair. Be relaxed and comfortable. These are Taoist, so you do not have to cross your legs. Have nothing restricting your arm movements. Learn the breath control sequence and the moves by memory first. You can do them with your eyes open while you are learning to memorize, but after that, always do the seated meditation with your eyes closed. Have the tongue on the roof of the mouth. Take three relaxed breaths to start. Next, take a breath and let 90% out. Take a full breath from that point and let it all out. Take a breath and let 50% out. Take a full breath from that point and let it all out. Take a breath and let 20% out. Take a full breath from that point and let it all out.Breath normal for five minutes after finishing the last percentage control sequence while taking that same five minutes to do the moves of the form so slowly that it actually takes five minutes to finish the form one time. At the end of the form, do not open your eyes or move around until you take three relaxed complete breaths to poisedly come out of the meditation.

Striking Procedure

Get a chair and a couple of paint buckets. Fill Styrofoam ice chests full of water on top of the buckets. Everyday at the same time, lower and raise the hands very slowly in the water. The hands never break water. In other words the hands on the way up never have the palm leaving contact with the water. Both hand simultaneously raise and lower together in the water. The hands should move so slowly that you could barely notice them moving at all. You will learn to not zig zag and you will learn how to "cut" the water like a laser in a straight line up and down using chi with time and repetition. This rids the wasted motion and increases speed. You do this at the same time everyday without fail for 500 days according to oral tradition. Be creative, anything is better than nothing, especially with this rare lineage. By the way the legendary value of this rare iron palm levels of springy palm were valued at $85,000 per meditation.

In perspective of the center piece coconut break, the springy palm damages the meat inside the coconut without damaging the outside hard shell. I have cut coconuts open after my strikes to verify this. I even documented breaking the shell while leaving the coconut in tact. Training eclectically in so many of these methods has produced some miraculous breaking experiences. This is what a fellow Urantia book reader with a couple of Masters degrees in science related fields allowed me to quote when I asked him for his two cents regarding this legendary oral tradition phenomenon. His name is Sandor Szabados and here are his comments for this article. "As to why the monks believed that such a blow would cause cancer, I can only speculate, more so because the cause (s) of cancer are not really known at present. Here is my guess, for whatever it is worth. Cancer is defined as 'an uncontrolled growth of cells that disrupt body tissue.' The blow (s) could produce high-energy waves that could conceivably disrupt the 'harmony' of the waves generated by the electrons in the atoms of 'healthy' cells, just as x-rays and ultraviolet rays do. It is known that exposure to these high-energy waves causes cancer because they are very short and thus able to penetrate soft tissue. Blows of this type used in your martial arts "may" do the same."

Conclusion

The names in Chinese of the "19" ingredient all-purpose iron palm external hand liniment dit da jow and weights to make a gallon are listed for historical purposes. The same applies to the legendary quick reactions formula. The "19" ingredient jow formula contains (3) toxic ingredients that are highlighted. It is strictly "external only." The quick reactions herbal list would need some substitution of ingredients in certain cases and be approved for an individual by their western and eastern medical doctors and a licensed Chinese herbalist to prepare properly and suggest doses based on the multitude of council and that individual's personal health factors. I do not say you need or should try these formulas. I have, but under strict guidance and limited time. On external jows, always use conservatively. Keep away from children, pets, mucous membranes and fire or excessive heat…alcohol is flammable! A few drops or more rubbed into the hands before the seated meditation is what I use to bring up the bioelectricity levels in the hands for greater sensitivity results.

The quick reaction formula must have the toxic ingredients neutralized and made into pills (cooked in honey,) or capsules. Doses vary and certain ingredients from the monk's lists that are hundreds of years old, by necessity at times require an herbalists guidance in substituting because of new laws and research. Also, according to legend, because these are considered higher level iron palm types, one would be expected to do the meditations daily at the exact same time and for a full five minutes after the last breath control sequence. That is, after the last breath numerical sequence, go directly into regular breathing and do the form so slowly that it takes five minutes. For best results do this alone in a quite space. No one should be in the room. If they are, they must be quiet and not bump into you. I suggest you be at least 21 years old before trying herb formulas, and then, with your doctor's approval. All healers can benefit from truisms contained in a relic iron palm type from the past.
